Vertical farm, educational garden, short food chain, social agriculture, mushrooms production, circular innovation and community rooftop gardens

Background:

The Cité Maraîchère (in the city center of Romainville) will be an eco-friendly vertical glasshouse devoted to urban agriculture (1,000 m2 in the floors for market garden production in boxes and 100m 2 in the basement for mushrooms production), social inclusion, education, and job creation in farming, cooking and learning. The vertical market garden city will host available infrastructures and equipment such as a professional kitchen, an educational greenhouse, adjustable spaces for trainings, educational actions, meetings, events and a cafe/-canteen and, along with the building,  collective gardens and a collective compost. Project 100% led by the City of Romainville, expected to start in autumn 2020.

Vision:

The social project is to supply local fresh products to low-incomes locals and to educate citizens and children by creating a new public service supported by the City Council. The agronomic project is to test circular, local and economic substrates and to grow various and chemical-free vegetables in boxes. In the FoodE project, the Cité Maraîchère will mainly serve as demonstrator and place for communication and dissemination. The Cité Maraîchère’s activities will be completed by the creation of 13 orchards and 9 rooftop gardens for urban agriculture integrated into apartment blocks which will be built in the frame of the Yuri Gagarin’s urban renewal. This district is another priority neighborhoods of the city. Thus, with a total of almost 1 ha delivered from now till 2027, these other areas should raise and diversify local food production, test urban renewal based on urban agriculture, benefit inhabitants of Yuri Gagarin social housings. During the FoodE program, the first rooftop “Vassou” will be delivered in June 2020, then 1 orchard in 2022, and 2 others ones – with 1 public orchard- in 2023.
